![]() ![]() She talks about how women walking alone into a hotel are automatically assumed to be sex workers, or how women are blamed when they are raped. She discusses the way women are expected to shrink themselves and make sacrifices for their husbands, how they are discouraged from pursuing careers, how they are taught shame. ![]() ![]() Adichie does a good job of addressing and explaining that, but she also does an excellent job at giving strong examples of the discrimination that women especially face as a result of our gender. Too many people in the world today have such misconceptions about feminists because they do not realize that the movement is in the interest of both men and women. Her discussion was engaging, honest, and above all else, accurate. ![]() Adichie’s TED talk about feminism, however, was hands down the best representation of feminism that I have ever heard. Over the past few months, I have become increasingly opinionated and passionate about women’s rights and equal opportunity for genders, reading articles, watching speeches, and listening to Slam Poetry. At that time, I did not want to be associated with the negative, man-hating connotation of that word, even though I knew in my heart that the stereotype was wrong and that I am, in fact, very much a feminist. “Oh no, you’re not a feminist, are you?” I remember responding with an adamant no to the boy who asked me this question. ![]()
